Not Enough Attention Paid to Risks of
Trans Fats
Daily Yomiuri Online
July 3, 2007
The Japanese will not be introducing regulations
on trans fat limits any time soon. After estimating the average intake
of trans fats based on data in the national health and nutrition
statistics and the nation’s production of processed edible
fats and oils, The Cabinet Office’s Food Safety Commission
announced that the Japanese face no imminent risks, as their intake
of the substance is lower than that of Western countries. Where
the daily intake for American adults was estimated at 5.8 grams,
the intake in Japan was estimated much lower, at 0.7 to 1.3 grams.
It should not go unnoticed, however, that the data did not account
for fat and oil in shortening used in restaurant food, meaning
the intake quantity could have been underestimated. Read

Trans Fat Holdouts Remain in Supermarkets, Despite Labeling
CSPI.net
June 11, 2007
Despite labeling requirements introduced in 2006
requiring trans fat amounts to be listed on the nutrition facts,
many products still contain the artery-clogging substance according
to a supermarket survey conducted by the Center for Science in the
Public Interest (CSPI). These findings have prompted the CSPI to
renew its call for the FDA to phase out partially hydrogenated oil
altogether. The FDA rejected CSPI’s petition in 2004, which
required restaurants to disclose the presence of trans fat. Since
then, many restaurants chains and food manufacturers have rid their
products of the substance, making it hard for anyone in the food

Why Your Oil Became Partially Hydrogenated

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, the
current villain of the food industry, was once considered a

cholesterol and can clog arteries. Read
