The Connecticut Senate introduced two bills in 2009 that would have educated consumers about the nutrition value of away-from-home food choices. Both bills would have required restaurants and other retail food establishments with 10 or more locations nationwide to list calories on menus and menu boards. One of the bills would have also required the following nutrition information to be available upon request: grams of saturated and trans fat, grams of carbohydrates, and milligrams of sodium per serving. On July 2, 2009, Governor, M. Jodi Rell vetoed the bill that would have provided nutrition information to consumers.
In 2007, a trans fat ban was defeated in the Senate. Menu labeling bills were introduced in both 2005 and 2007 for chain restaurants with 10 or more locations nationwide, but they were also defeated.
The Board of Representatives has approved a trans fat ban in city restaurants. The ban does not include items in manufacturer’s packaging. The ban went into effect July 1, 2008.
