Tennessee

State legislatures introduced three bills during the 2009 legislative session that would have prohibited trans fat. One bill solely pertaining to foodservice establishments was withdrawn from consideration. The two other bills would have prohibited trans fat within the public school system. All three bills were withdrawn from consideration.

On February 22, 2010, the Senate overturned the Governor’s veto on a bill that prohibits the Commissioner of Health, any County or Metropolitan Board of Health, or political subdivision from enacting an ordinance or issuing any rule or regulation to the provision of food nutrition in foodservice establishments.

In 2007, Tennessee proposed four bills to eliminate trans fat in food service establishments and in school nutrition programs. All four of the bills died at the end of the legislative session.

Davidson County, TN

Davidson County officials adopted an ordinance that required foodservice establishments with 15 or more locations nationwide to post calories for all standard menu items on printed menus, menu boards, and food tags. The ordinance was supposed to take effect on March 31, 2010; however, Tennessee has passed a bill prohibiting an appointed board from having the ability to pass menu labeling ordinances, so the bill has become void.
