The House introduced a bill that would require restaurants to provide consumers with the total number of calories per menu item for establishments with 10 or more locations statewide. Calories would be required on menus, menu boards, and food tags. The regulations would take effect upon the signature of the Governor. The House Committee on Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environmental Affairs is reviewing the bill.
In 2009-2010 the South Carolina Senate introduced two bills that would warn consumers of or eliminate the use of artificial trans fat. One bill would require foodservice establishments to provide a warning statement if they serve food that contains or was cooked in trans fat. The other bill would prohibit foodservice establishments from preparing, serving, or providing foods containing artificial trans fat. The Senate Committee on Medical Affairs is reviewing both bills.
In 2008, a bill requiring the Greenville County public schools to list the nutrition information on lunch menus was referred to the Greenville Delegation.
In 2007, a proposal to prohibit restaurants and foodservice establishments from serving or providing food-containing trans fat was introduced. The bill was referred to the Medical Affairs Committee, and died at the end of the legislative session.
